What Plants To Pick? PDF Print E-mail

Impulse buying is not the best way to shop for plants for your new garden. You’ll get much better value for your dollar with a little forethought. Consider the following points before the trip to the nursery.

Garden Style

Know on the style of garden that you desire is the first step.

Do you like Formal? Natural? Japanese? Informal? Contemporary? It is important to consider something that you like, that you would feel comfortable living with for years to come.

Look through gardening books and magazines. Identify your likes and dislikes. This will influence the plants you choose.

Lifestyle

If you have a career that occupies your time and on weekends wish to enjoy time with your family or just want to relax, then you should aim for a low-maintenance style. Choose plants that require less pruning, watering and maintenance is best.

If you are a avid gardener and have a lot of time on your hands then you can enjoy a full and lush botanical garden in your yard. Experience a full range of plants, including annuals, bulbs, vegetables, perennials, fruit and flowering trees and shrubs.

Water

Unless you live in the desert all plants need water! It is a worth while investment for your landscape that you install an irrigation system to help maintain your plants life.

If you want to help conserve water then consider low maintenance and plants that require minimal water. Environmentally, it is much more responsible to choose drought-resistant plants if you live in an area that experiences extended dry periods.

Climate

Choosing plants that grow well in your geographical area is important. Find a local garden center that is carrying plants best suited to grow in your area. Books that have a Hardiness Zone Map will indicate what plants will grow in your area.

Soil Type

One of the most important investments you can make is in the ground. Plants grow best in the soil conditions that are best suited for maximum growth. Most plants love Moist well drained soil with some nitrogen content, bulk triple mix soil is best. Soil that contains, peat moss, composted manure and sandy-loam soil is a good mix.

Sun/Shade

Choosing plants appropriate for the sun or shade will make all the difference. A costly mistake is picking a beautiful specimen plant and see it bake in the sun. Take time to see which areas are sunny and which are shaded and how this changes throughout the seasons.
